Subjects

The Project „ Children play Theatre“ has been develloped in cooperation between University professors, lecturers and students as well as teachers and children of schools in Essen. In the absence of suitable scripts, the plays were especially developed for this project. This took place with the aid of criteria provided by the teachers involved, as regards e.g. language use, structure, inclusion of music and dance. The plays were developed according to these guidelines, then prepared for performance by a cooperation of teachers, university students and children
In order for the plays to be really useful under school conditions it was necessary to develop “Tips for Teachers” for each individual play. Here information gathered from the school trials of the plays is also collated.

Tales of the little hedgehogs

The tales explore universal themes such as friendship, fear, courage, responsibility, hope, ambition, sadness and happiness. The central characters Hector and Holly Hedgehog meet wonderful creatures during their adventures – a Day Fairy, a Dream Bird, the Moon and Shooting Stars – and they make many animal friends. The fable-like tales are optimistic and entertaining. They are ideally suited for role reading in class and for performance, a great boost to the self-confidence of the children and sense of achievement for the class.

For learners of English as a second language, these tales provide rich, authentic language with some amusing and predictable repetition and a clear storyline. This is helpful for the first attempt at extensive reading. The greatest satisfaction is probably realised through a school performance. The children may act the animal characters themselves, or produce a puppet show with soft toys, glove puppets, or cut out figures.
